Basic Survival Course Packing List

PATHFINDER BASIC COURSE (ADIRONDACKS) EQUIPMENT LIST

The following items are REQUIRED and will be used for the completion of the Winter Survival Course. Each student MUST have their own equipment to complete the required deliverable tasks. The specific brands are recommendations and references. While you may substitute for other like items, it is your responsibility to ensure they are adequate and capable of completing assigned tasks.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you need to order items for the class, please do so at least two weeks in advance to ensure they are received in time. Orders cannot be shipped directly to the school.

FOOD IS NOT PROVIDED BRING ADEQUATE FOOD AND SNACKS. TIME WILL NOT BE DESIGNATED FOR EATING OR GIVEN TO PREPARE MEALS, CHOOSE FOOD AND SNACKS THAT CAN BE EATEN ON-THE-GO SO THAT YOU CAN EAT WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF. ELECTROLYTE DRINK MIXES ARE RECOMMENDED (GATORADE POWDER, ETC)

The 10 C’s of Survivability refer to the 10 Categories of Tools used in survival. Please separate the 10 C’s into an easily manageable backpack or haversack (shoulder bag) as these are the primary tools you will utilize (recommended items in parentheses):

1) CUTTING TOOLS

  • Fixed Blade Belt Knife (Mora Carbon Garberg)
  • Folding Saw (Silky Gomboy)
  • Multitool (Victorinox Trekker)

2) COMBUSTION DEVICES

  • Bic Lighters (2)
  • 5x Magnifying Lens
  • 1/2″ x 6″ Ferrocerium Rod (HD6 from Self Reliance Outfitters)

3) COVER ELEMENTS

  • 5’x7′ Emergency Space Blanket (Pathfinder Brand)
  • Drum Liners, 55-gallon, 6mil (4) (available on Self Reliance Outfitters)
  • Wool Blanket (one queen or two twin) (Pathfinder Queen Blanket)

4) CORDAGE

  • Paracord (25′)
  • Tarred Bank Line #36 (100′)

5) CONTAINER

  • 32 oz Water Bottle and Nesting Cup with Lid (Pathfinder)

6) COMPASS

  • Compass with Bezel Ring, Mag Lens, and Sighting Mirror (Suunto MC2 Global or NH)
  • Ranger Beads/Pace Counter

7) COTTON MATERIAL

  • 3′ x 3′ 100% Cotton Material (Shemagh or Orange XXXL Cotton T-Shirt)

8) CANDLING DEVICE

  • Headlamp with Spare Batteries (Princeton Ten EOS)

9) CARGO TAPE

  • Gorilla Tape (1 Large Roll)

10) CANVAS NEEDLE

  • Sail Needle #14

ADDITIONALLY, YOU WILL NEED:

  • All-Weather Notebook/Journal
  • 5 sheets 8.5″ x 11″ Rite in the Rain paper (can also be your All-Weather Notebook if 8.5×11″)
  • Pencils/All-Weather Pens (3)
  • Appropriate Hygiene Items (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Food and Snacks (on-the-go as time will not be given to prepare or designated to eat)
  • Any and all required prescription or over-the-counter medication (do not bring illegal drugs or unprescribed medication), including insect repellant and first aid items.

SAFETY ITEMS (OPTIONAL BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

  • Leather Work Gloves
  • Eye Protection
  • Snowshoes
  • Traction Devices (Yaktrax Pro)

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED EQUIPMENT LIST:
Weather can change at any time in the mountains and present training participants with emergency weather conditions. In addition to the normal packing list, all students attending a course at the Adirondack Campus must bring the following:

LAYERED CLOTHING SYSTEM:

  • Wicking Base Layer: Light or Medium Weight Merino Wool Top and Bottom Recommended
  • Insulating Layer: Heavyweight Merino Wool Top and Bottom Recommended
  • Durable Layer: Normal street clothes for cold weather (Pants, T-Shirt, Long Sleeve Shirt; 2 sets recommended)
  • Wind/Waterproof Later: Goretex Shell Parka and Pants Recommended
  • Wool Hat, Gloves, and Scarf
  • Wool Socks (3 Pair Minimum)
  • Appropriate Waterproof Boots or Shoes (2 Pair Recommended)
  • 30mL Dry Bag

This clothing system may be worn as needed or placed in the dry bag on standby (administratively) for emergencies depending on weather conditions.

About Joshua Enyart

Joshua Enyart is a former Army Ranger and Green Beret specializing in emergency and tactical survival, bushcraft, and preparedness, primarily in the Woodlands and Mountains of the Eastern United States.

Joshua Enyart is the Founder and Lead Instructor for Flint & Steel Critical Skills Group, LLC and is an Instructor for the Pathfinder School, LLC, and is an Instructor for Prepper Advantage.  Joshua has also been a contributor to both ReadyMan and the American Protection Alliance, and has been a speaker at the Prepper World Summit.

He has completed several military schools including Ranger, SERE Level-C (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape), Special Forces Qualification Course (Weapons), Special Forces Sniper Course, and trained as a Combat Hunter (Tracker).

Joshua completed a total of 11 Combat Tours in Iraq and in Afghanistan (as both Active Duty and as a Private Contractor) where he was awarded several medals including the Bronze Star. He has also been to the Jungle Operations Training Center in Panama (Central America) three times.

Joshua is a seasoned instructor that has completed both the Army Instructor Training Course and the Air Force Basic Instructor Course. He served as a senior Pre-Ranger Instructor for the 101st Airborne Division, Weapons and Tactics Instructor for the Air Force Special Operations Command, and a Sniper Trainer and Ground Warfare Instructor for the Marine Special Operations Command.

He is also an Emergency Medical Technician and a Junior in college majoring in Biology, working towards Physician’s Assistant School.
