Winter Survival Course Gear — Cold Weather Kit That Does Not Fail

Cold kills fast when gear fails. Winter survival training has a different risk profile than any other seasonal course — mistakes in shelter, fire, and layering that are recoverable in spring become life-threatening in cold weather. The Winter Survival Skills Course Gear collection at Gray Bearded Green Beret is the official gear list for GB2's cold-weather course, built by Special Forces veteran and survival instructor Joshua Enyart around tools that perform in frozen ground, wet snow, and sustained sub-freezing temperatures.

Fire in Winter — Redundancy Is Not Optional

Fire in winter conditions is harder to start and more urgently needed than in any other environment. The winter gear list addresses that with layered redundant ignition: Ferro Rod, UCO Stormproof Matches, Premium 2 inch Glass Magnifying Lens (the most reliable solar ignition tool in bright-snow conditions), Tinder Tabs, the Waxed Canvas Tinder Pouch for tinder management, and the charring tin for building char cloth reserves. This level of ignition redundancy is the minimum Joshua requires at every winter live event.

Shelter and Cordage in Cold Conditions

The Tentsmiths Oilskin Tarp is the shelter anchor for this course. Oilskin handles snow load, freeze-thaw cycles, and extended moisture exposure better than coated nylon alternatives. The GB2 Waxed Canvas Bed Sleeve is the course sleeping system component. The GB2 Waxed Canvas Haversack carries the kit. Cordage runs through the Paracord Ridgeline Hank and #36 Bank Line — both maintain flexibility at low temperatures where braided synthetics stiffen and become difficult to tie under gloved hands.

Water, Knives, and Axes in the Cold

Hydration in winter is consistently under-prioritized — cold suppresses the thirst response while dehydration accelerates with physical output. The GB2 Klean Kanteen 40oz handles carry capacity. The Stainless Steel Kessel Bush Pot handles snow melt and open-fire water treatment. The cutting tools on this list — LT Wright and Helle Norway fixed-blade knives, Hultafors axes and saws — are selected for the sustained wood processing demands of building cold-weather shelters and maintaining fires over multi-day courses.

First Aid and Navigation — The Winter Standard

The full NAR and GB2 first aid kit is required at every live course: Gen 7 CAT, 4 inch ETD, NAR Wound Packing Gauze, and NAR Emergency Blanket. The emergency blanket is especially relevant in winter for hypothermia management alongside its standard trauma role. Navigation runs on the Suunto MC-2, protractor, and pace counter — the same system as every other GB2 course.

The Winter Survival Skills Course is one of the most demanding courses GB2 offers and has the least tolerance for improvised or underprepared gear. Arrive with this list complete. Browse Gray Bearded Green Beret live training events for winter course dates in your region.
