Charring and Storage Tin

This Charring and Storage Tin is a hinged top container roughly the same size as an Altoids can with rounded edges. It is perfect for making charcloth and charring natural material for follow-on fires. While charred material is typically thought to be reserved for traditional flint and steel fire starting, charred material makes every fire that much easier and can be used with any ignition source! Keep the charred material safe inside the tin after making it.

This Charring and Storage Tin can also be used to make custom kits and keep critical smaller items organized and accessible.

Add a Flint and Steel Kit to store inside the tin along with your charred material so your ignition source is always available.

  • Altoid Size Tin Can with Hinged Lid
  • 3.75 x 2.45 x 0.9 inch (L x W x H)
  • Thickness is 0.23 mm
  • Volume is 8.75 cu.in.

Can this tin go directly into the fire to char material?

Yes, it will have no problem surviving the fire when making your char.

Will small items like lighters and emergency tinder fit inside?

Yes, there are a number of small items, including full sized big lighters, that fit well inside the tin.

Do I need to poke a hole in the top of the tin to allow gas to escape when making char?

No, the hinges on the tin allow plenty of gas to escape. There is no need to add another hole.

A required item to make char cloth. Doesn’t have a coating to burn. Lid has a loose fit to aid in the venting of the gasses. Can be used to store small items or the char cloth.

Really works well for its intended purpose. I really like that I don’t have to burn the paint off of it like mint tins

  6. Darren (verified owner)

I use it to transport the magnifying lens in relative safety from breaks and scratches.
