Complete Survival Instructor Training Program
The GB2 Survival Instructor Training Program is a program of courses designed to teach the necessary wilderness skills to develop a safe, credible, and successful school or business within the survival and bushcraft industry. You will not only become proficient in all the necessary skills as a practitioner, you will also learn the skills necessary to become an effective teacher and business-person.
Survival Instructor Certification
Become certified as a Wilderness Survival Instructor! Students who successfully complete this program will receive certification from the Gray Bearded Green Beret. This can be a great stepping stone to anyone trying to get started in this industry and gain traction. GB2 Cadre are recognized as some of the most professional, most proficient, and most fit survival instructors in the industry. Anyone successfully completing and receiving a certification through this program would instantly be recognized for the same qualities.
Systematic Approach to Survival Instructor Development
Professional, Proficient, Mentally Tough, and Physically Fit Instructors cannot be produced quickly. It takes time. While there are shorter programs available out there, we do not feel they set you up for success in the industry as they are heavily focused on developing and testing the individual survival skills only, and not on extended time and experience using and developing those skills, learning how to teach those skills, or learning how to run a successful survival school or business on your own. This program is not meant to simply make you an instructor, it is meant to make you a great instructor.
The Survival Instructor Training Program is broken down into three phases:
Survival Skills Development Phase (Instructor Candidate)
The first phase of the Survival Instructor Training Program is focused on developing your individual proficiency in critical survival, bushcraft, winter survival, primitive survival, map reading and land navigation, and wilderness medical skills. Proficiency in these skills is the foundation. You have to know how to do it before you can learn to teach it. During this phase you will be considered an "Instructor Candidate".
This phase includes the six most critical courses that anyone who ventures into the outdoors should have and all instructors should know at the highest level:
- Wilderness Survival Course (4-Days)
- Bushcraft Skills Course (4-Days)
- Winter Survival Course (4-Days)
- Primitive Survival Course (4-Days)
- Master Navigator Course (4-Days)
- Wilderness First Responder Course (7-Days)
There are 27 days of training conducted at live training events during this phase. These courses introduce you to many skills, often for the first time. There is often considerable lengths of time between these courses with an expectation that you will use that time to continue to practice, develop proficiency, and perfect these skills. Instructor Candidates are expected to be extremely proficient in all skills taught at these courses at all times. Expect to be tested to a 100% proficiency level during the Final Instructor Evaluation before receiving your certification.
Survival Instructor Development Phase (Instructor Apprentice)
Upon completion of your initial skills training and development, you will receive an invitation to attend the next scheduled Train the Trainer Course. The focus of the Train the Trainer Course shifts to actual course curriculum and development, principles of adult learning, principles of instruction, business, and marketing. During this course, sometimes referred to as "Instructor Camp", you will learn how to go from simply being good at doing the skills, to knowing how to actually teach them effectively, as well as business fundamentals you will need to know.
Upon completion of the Train the Trainer Course, new Apprentices will begin the hybrid portion of their development. Apprentices will be assigned certain training modules that they will learn how to teach. These modules will be filmed and sent in to GB2 Cadre to be critiqued. This is the most cost-effective way to develop teaching skills and experience through repetition, and sets the Apprentice up to teach the same module at a live GB2 event in front of actual students during OJT (On the Job Training).
OJT consists of course attendance, but on the cadre side of the event. This gives the Apprentice valuable insight as to course infrastructure and setup, control measures necessary for student safety, as well as delivering instruction to a live audience. Apprentices must complete a minimum of five (5) OJT events. Apprentices are not limited to this number and can take as many OJT slots as they like for their own professional development. Much like an internship, Apprentices will be responsible for travel to and from these OJT events and will not be reimbursed or paid.
- Train the Trainer Course (4-Day [Invitation Only])
- Hybrid Distance Learning and Evaluation (Varies)
- On the Job Training (Minimum 20 Days)
In addition to the 4-Day Train the Trainer Course and hybrid video evaluations, there are a minimum of 20 days of OJT that must be conducted at live training events during this phase.
Final Instructor Evaluation Phase
This phase begins when the Instructor Apprentice has completed all previous requirements. Apprentices will then receive an invitation to attend the Final Instructor Evaluation Course. No information about the Final Instructor Evaluation is or will be made available for this course to protect it's integrity as a reliable measure for certification from the GB2 Survival Instructor Training Program.
However, Apprentices should expect to be tested to a 100% proficiency level at all tasks taught in any of the courses attended. They should also expect a physical fitness evaluation. Finally, it is expected that the Apprentice should be capable of delivering information effectively.
Upon successful completion, the Apprentice will receive his/her Instructor Tab and Certification from the Gray Bearded Green Beret.
Flexible Scheduling and Self-Paced Learning
The program is self-paced, and includes 35 Training Days plus a minimum of 20 OJT Days, with considerable time to practice skills between courses. The core courses do not have to be taken in any specific order, and they do not have to be taken within any time frame. Tuition paid for these courses does not expire. The exception to this is the Train the Trainer Course and Final Instructor Evaluation. No student may attend either of those until satisfying prerequisites and being invited to do so.
Please note that due to the deep discount, and logistics involved in tracking you through your training for an unlimited length of time since it never expires, this GB2 Survival Instructor Training Program Bundle is 100% non-refundable.

FAQs:
Is the GB2 Survival Instructor Training Bundle refundable?
No, due to the deep discount, and logistics involved in tracking you through your training for an unlimited length of time since it never expires, this GB2 Survival Instructor Training Program Bundle is 100% non-refundable. However, if you cannot make it to a scheduled course, we will work with you on crediting you forward to the next available course so long as you give us 30-days notice. If you do not show up for the start of a course and have not coordinated for a credit-forward, that portion of your bundle is considered used and you would need to purchase a ticket for that course separately in order to attend. The rest of your bundle would still be valid.
What happens if I do not complete a specific course?
If you are attending a training course and for whatever reason do not complete training, you will not receive credit for another attempt at that course. That portion of your bundle is considered used, and you would need to purchase another ticket for the individual course to attend. However, for medical emergencies or circumstances outside the student's control (as decided by Cadre and Staff), the student may be offered a credit forward into another course. This is at the sole discretion of the cadre. Lack of proficiency, poor physical fitness resulting in an inability to complete the course, training refusals (not participating in any portion of the course), integrity violations (cheating), or voluntarily withdrawing (quitting) from a course will not be considered for a credit forward into another course offering and may result in the removal of the student from the program (non-refundable).
Can these courses be taken on a pay-as-you-go basis?
Yes, all of these courses are available individually, but individual courses do not include this 25% bundle discount. The bundle discount cannot be applied to individual courses on the pay-as-you-go option. However, individual courses are tracked and applied towards both a GB2 Wilderness Survival Training Program Certification and a GB2 Survival Instructor Training Program Certification.
Is there a recommended order for taking the courses?
Yes, by design you would take Wilderness Survival, Bushcraft, and then Primitive while taking the Winter Survival Course when it becomes available in that schedule. Master Navigator and WFR can also be taken at any time. However, it is self-paced and there are no requirements to take it in that order. Students should take available classes as their schedule permits. The only exception to this is the Train the Trainer Course and the Final Instructor Evaluation. Neither of those can be taken until prerequisites are met and the Apprentice is invited.
Does my tuition credit for the GB2 Survival Instructor Training Program expire?
No, this is a self-paced program and you can take as long as you like to complete it.
What are the gear requirements for instructor training?
For a comprehensive list, it's best to review the required packing lists for each course in the program. You will need those items for those courses, but they do not have to be purchased at once, in advance, and often gear you already own covers some of those requirements. The system is designed to have you use and get comfortable with the same gear throughout the training courses.
Does this certification guarantee me an instructor position for the Gray Bearded Green Beret's Survival School?
No, the primary purpose of this program and certification is to enable you to succeed in your own business and school. This industry is difficult to get started in, and to make a name for yourself. It is extremely helpful to have a certification from a reputable school and company when you get started as it implies a certain level of training and proficiency.
However, this program is the only way to become a Gray Bearded Green Beret Instructor. The top Apprentices in each graduating class may be offered positions at the school depending on needs.
