Live Hands-On Survival and Bushcraft Training, Held Regionally Across the US
You can read every survival book ever written, watch every YouTube field demonstration, and still freeze when the temperature drops, the rain starts, and the gear in your pack suddenly has to do what the marketing copy promised. Live training is where the gap between knowledge and capability closes — and it only closes one way, by doing the work under instructor supervision until the body knows the movement without the mind needing to direct it.
Gray Bearded Green Beret live training events are taught by Special Forces veteran and survival instructor Joshua Enyart, drawing on 3+ decades of service and instruction. Courses are held regionally across the NE, SE, NW, and SW US so that students can train in the environments and seasons they actually live and travel in — desert packing in the SW, winter skills in the NE and NW, bushcraft and wilderness courses across multiple regions, and Master Navigator land-navigation courses in terrain that punishes a sloppy compass bearing. The regional rotation matters: a winter skills course taught in a parking lot in October is not a winter skills course. The cold, the snow, and the cumulative fatigue of multiple days outdoors are part of the curriculum, not adversaries to it.
Every event in this collection is built around hands-on repetition under instructor supervision. Shelter is constructed and slept in, not diagrammed on a whiteboard. Fire is built in adverse conditions until the technique is reflexive. Navigation legs are walked end-to-end, with the consequences of a missed bearing being a longer day in the woods, not a red mark on a quiz. First aid scenarios are run against the clock with realistic moulage. You leave with skills your body has done, not just notes you've taken.
Wilderness medical certifications (WFA and WFR) are taught in partnership with SOLO Schools, the longest-running wilderness medicine school in the United States. Your certification card will read SOLO; the curriculum is the SOLO standard, recognized industry-wide by professional rescue services, outdoor employers, and outfitters. WFA is the foundational wilderness first aid certification suitable for general outdoor recreationists and weekend trip leaders; WFR is the longer, more rigorous certification expected of professional guides, outdoor educators, and serious expedition members.
Class sizes are capped to keep the student-to-instructor ratio meaningful. Most events sell out before their official close date — book the seat, then build out your gear from the matching course-companion collection on this site. The course-companion collections (Bushcraft Skills, Wilderness Skills, Winter Skills, Master Navigator, Desert Packing List) each list the specific gear used in that course, so you arrive prepared rather than spending the first morning swapping out the wrong layering system or the wrong knife for the work.
The short version: training is the irreducible step. The gear is the system; the training is the skill. This collection is where the skill is built.
